Azan story of Abi Mahdhurah قصة آذان أبي محذورة
مقتطفات عامة من السيرة General excerpts from the Prophet' biography
The Holy Quran came to admonish the Companions for their actions in the Battle of Hunayn
As Allah Almighty said: {Allah has already given you victory in many battles, and on the day of Hunayn, when your great numbers pleased you, but they availed you nothing, and the earth, vast as it is, became constricted for you, and you turned back in retreat.}
We learn from this noble verse that
in times of hardship and sorrow, the world almost seems dark, even if light shines in every corner, and the earth, in all its vastness, feels constricted. The abundance of resources is not the sole cause of victory; rather, there are two fundamental pillars for victory in both personal and public battles: taking the necessary steps and receiving Allah's blessings.
The Story of Abu Mahdhura's Call to Prayer (may God be pleased with him)
The story in brief
Abu Mahdhura said: I went out with a group—meaning, with the polytheists—and we were on the road to Hunayn. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions were returning from Hunayn after their defeat in the Battle of Hunayn. We met him on the road, and the muezzin of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) called the adhan with him. We heard the muezzin's voice and tried to avoid him, so we started shouting, telling him what was happening and mocking him. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the noise and sent for us.
We stood before him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Which of you was it whose voice I heard raised?” Then all the people pointed to Abu Mahdhura, so he let them all go and left me in front of him. Then he said to Abu Mahdhura: Stand up and then give the call to prayer. At that time Abu Mahdhura said: There was no one more hateful to me than the Messenger of God. So, the Messenger of God said: Say: God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest, I bear witness that there is no god but God, I bear witness that there is no god but God, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God. So he said it in a low voice. Then he said to me: Go back and raise your voice with it, and say: I bear witness that there is no god but God, I bear witness that there is no god but God, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God, Come to prayer, Come to prayer, Come to success, Come to success, God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest, then say: There is no god but God.
Until we stood before him, may God bless him and grant him peace. He, may God bless him and grant him peace, said
Which of you did I hear your voice raised? Then all the people pointed to Abu Mahdhura, so he let them all go and left me in front of him. Then he said to Abu Mahdhura, “Stand up and give the call to prayer.” At that time, Abu Mahdhura said, “There was no one I hated more than the Messenger of God.” The Messenger of God said, “Say: God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest. I bear witness that there is no god but God. I bear witness that there is no god but God. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God.” So, he said it in a low voice. Then he said to me, “Go back and raise your voice and say: ‘I bear witness that there is no god but God. I bear witness that there is no god but God. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Come to prayer. Come to prayer. Come to success. Come to success. God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest.’ Then say: ‘There is no god but God.’”
Then he called me when I had finished the call to prayer. He gave me a bag containing some silver. Then he placed his hand on my forehead, Abu Mahdhura, and then passed his blessed hand over my face twice, and then twice over my hand. Then the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said… And he said: May God bless you. So, I said: O Messenger of God, allow me to give the call to prayer in Mecca. He said: I have given you permission for that. So, all that was hateful towards the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, went away, and I returned with love for the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. So, I came to Attab bin Asid, the agent of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, in Mecca, and I performed the call to prayer with him, by order of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. And he continued to give the call to prayer in Mecca until he died in the year fifty-nine. So, the call to prayer remained with his son, and his son was born in Mecca. And it was said: The call to prayer remained in his descendants until the time of Imam Al-Shafi’i.
The Psychology: How to Deal with Harsh Criticism
1- Eye contact will cease immediately
Note: The Prophet's reaction: (He addressed the person with the melodious voice directly, without speaking to any of his other companions.)
2- Say firmly: Stop. Remember that your strength intimidates the critic and makes him feel cowardly.
Note: The Prophet's reaction: (As for you young men, go back, and leave Abu Mahdhura where you are.)
3- Take charge
Note: The Prophet's reaction: He resolved the issue himself and did not leave it to any of his companions, despite the heavy defeat at the Battle of Hunayn. The situation demanded the Prophet's personal intervention.
4- Minimize contact.
He stroked his hair and forehead and prayed for him.
The Witness
1- Grief filled hearts after the defeat in the battle, with the feeling that despite their large numbers, they could not be defeated. The lesson for Muslims is that strength comes from God Almighty. There is no favoritism shown to Muslims, even if they are striving to support God and His Messenger. Whoever errs will be held accountable. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed Bilal ibn Rabah to call the Adhan (call to prayer) because his voice was gentle and softened hearts. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say to him, "Give us comfort through it, O Bilal," meaning the prayer (Salat).
2- Words and actions are interpreted differently by individuals according to their values and cultures. Ultimately, a person's culture determines their attitudes and actions. This is what we observed in Abu Mahdhurah's behavior before his conversion to Islam: his mockery and hatred, which harbored gloating over the Prophet and the believers, transformed after his conversion into love, goodwill, and support for Islam and the Muslims.
3- I remind myself and you that the unlettered Prophet Muhammad, who could neither read nor write, did not possess modern psychology, yet he was the best—in this situation—peace be upon him.
4- Yes, the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, was a leader, not a manager—if I may use that term. He did not rebuke Abu Mahdhura, nor did he prevent him from giving the call to prayer in Mecca, a position of high standing to this day, even though his method of demonstrating his talent was not appropriate.
Secondly, an analysis of the stance of the noble companion Abu Mahdhura (may God be pleased with him):
The Psychology tells us that cursing and insults directly affect a person's feelings,
self-esteem, pride, identity, and ego. Therefore, regardless of the reason for the cursing, how it is done, or when it occurs, the truth is that it will leave a scar. People distort what they see in order to weaken those they dislike. They act as if they are the smartest person in the room.
When insecure people feel threatened by the possibility that others are smarter than them, they feel an irrational challenge. Even if they don't know the truth about what they are talking about, they will put on a show hoping to deceive the audience with their display.
Needless to say, they will consider your contributions irrelevant or convey information they already know,
An analysis of his personality (may God be pleased with him)
1. They say that empty vessels make the most noise. Were his vessels empty (may God be pleased with him)? No, on the contrary, he possessed a hidden, unknown talent that he wanted to be recognized for.
2 - Abu Mahdhura wanted to draw attention to his talent, and his method was to mock our master Bilal, may God be pleased with him (the most melodious of voices), so that he would also call the Adhan. The meaning of the permission of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, to do that is that in the Sunnah of the Messenger of God there is (approval), and that means that he permitted it. Should we take from that: to announce our talents if no one discovers them, but in a way other than the method of Abu Mahdhura, but it is as our master Joseph, peace be upon him, said (Appoint me over the storehouses of the land). So, is the request for employment based on a specific genius in a specific thing?
