Her Name

Ruqayyah bint Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)

Her Mother

Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (may God be pleased with her), Mother of the Believers

Her birth order among her sisters

She was the second sister and daughter

Her Conversion to Islam (may God be pleased with her)

Ruqayyah (may God be pleased with her) embraced Islam along with the family of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), including her mother Khadijah (peace be upon her) and all her sisters.

Her Noble Titles (may God be pleased with her)

The Companion of the Two Emigrations, Daughter of Muhammad (may God be pleased with her)

Her First Marriage (may God be pleased with her)

When Ruqayyah (may God be pleased with her) and her sister Umm Kulthum (peace be upon them) reached marriageable age, Abu Talib proposed marriage to his nephews, Utbah and Utaybah, sons of his brother Abd al-Uzza (Abu Lahab). The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) agreed because of Abu Talib's high standing with him and because the suitors were his cousins. Shortly after the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) began receiving his divine message and calling to the true religion, the Quraysh launched their war against him. The leaders of the Quraysh gathered and said, "You have relieved Muhammad of his burden, so return his daughters to him and distract him with them." The leaders of the Quraysh went to the three sons-in-law of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and said to them, one after the other, "Divorce your wife, and we will..." We will marry you to any woman from Quraysh you wish. But Abu al-Aas, the husband of Zaynab al-Kubra, may God be pleased with her and him, refused. But Abu Lahab, our two sons, responded immediately. Abu Lahab had said to his two sons: My head is forbidden to you if you do not divorce Muhammad’s daughter. Lady Ruqayya endured this unjust divorce with patience and certainty in God and remained in her father’s house, sharing with him the concerns of the call and what he faced in the path of God Almighty.

Her second marriage, may God be pleased with her, was to Uthman, may God be pleased with him.

God Almighty compensated her and gave her a righteous, noble, and great husband, one promised Paradise, handsome and of the most distinguished lineage among the young men of Quraysh: Uthman ibn Affan, may God be pleased with him. Thus, this kind heart was rewarded by the Lord of Glory with the best of men, our master Uthman ibn Affan, whom Quraysh loved. A mother, when she wanted to show affection to her children, would say to them, "I love you, by the Most Merciful, as much as Quraysh loved Uthman."

Ruqayyah and her husband Uthman... the best two people a person have ever seen.

And the Quraysh were enraged by this marriage, for they had wanted to distract Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, with his daughters, but Ruqayyah had married a better husband than the one who had divorced her.

The Migration to Abyssinia

When the persecution of the Muslims by the disbelievers intensified, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded them to migrate to Abyssinia. Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) and his wife Ruqayyah were the first to migrate, despite their recent marriage. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of their migration, he said: "They are the first to migrate to Allah after Lot." Uthman was given a son named Abdullah, after whom he was known.

The Return to Mecca

Rumors spread that the Quraysh had embraced Islam, and the migrants longed to return to the Sacred City. Some could not overcome this aroused yearning and prepared to depart hastily, while others preferred to remain in their place of exile until they could ascertain the truth of the rumors about the Quraysh's truce with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Ruqayyah and her husband, the noble companion Uthman ibn Affan, were among those who returned. When Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her) arrived in Mecca, she learned that her mother, and our mother, the great Khadijah, the mother of the Believers, had passed away. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived and found his daughter in the depths of her pain and sorrow at losing her mother, he embraced her and comforted her until she calmed down and found patience and peace.

The Migration to Medina

She did not stay long in Mecca and migrated to Medina. She had given birth to her son, Abdullah ibn Uthman. In Medina, her son Abdullah died at the age of six from a pecked rooster.

Her Death, may God be pleased with her

No sooner had her son Abdullah passed away than she was struck by May God be pleased with her. She suffered a severe fever due to her grief over the loss of her beloved daughter. Her great husband stayed by her side, tending to her and caring for her until the Muslims set out for the Battle of Badr. Uthman, may God be pleased with him, wanted to answer the call to jihad, but the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, permitted him to remain with his wife, who was experiencing what resembled the throes of death. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, allocated him a share of the spoils of war, counting those who were present. Lady Ruqayyah contracted measles and remained ill with it until her soul departed to her Lord, the Exalted, in the second year of the Hijra. She passed away, may God be pleased with her. The news of the great victory at Badr arrived, and the grieving father, peace and blessings be upon him, came and bid farewell to his daughter, prayed over her, and the entire city of Medina mourned Ruqayyah, may God be pleased with her. May God have mercy on Lady Ruqayyah. What a wonderful wife for a wonderful husband! Lady Ruqayyah passed away at the age of 22 and was buried in Al-Baqi'.

And on the authority of Abu Umamah ibn Sahl, on the authority of his father, he said

“When the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, finished with Badr, he sent two messengers to the people of Medina. He sent Zayd Ibn Haritha (may God be pleased with him) went to the people of the lower part of the city, and Abdullah ibn Rawaha (may God be pleased with him) went to the people of the upper part to give them the good news of God's victory for His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Zayd ibn Haritha was with his son Usama when the earth was leveled over Ruqayya, the daughter of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). (Narrated by Al-Hakim). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the campaign and learned of the death of his daughter Ruqayya (may God be pleased with her), he went out to Baqi' al-Gharqad and stood at her grave, praying for mercy and forgiveness for her.
