Her Name
Hind bint Abi Umayya ibn al-Mughirah ibn Abdullah ibn Makhzum
Her Titles
Umm Salamah
Mother of the Believers
Her First Marriage
She was married to Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Asad. Abu Salamah's mother was Barrah bint Abi Talib, the cousin of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Abu Salamah (may God be pleased with him) died in the fourth year of the Hijra. He participated in the Battles of Badr and Uhud, where he was wounded by an arrow in his upper arm. He spent a month recovering from the wound, which then healed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him on a mission in the month of Muharram, thirty-five months after his migration, with one hundred and fifty men to Qatan (a mountain). He was gone for twenty-nine nights, then returned to Medina. His wound reopened, and he died from it on the eighth of Jumada al-Akhirah in the fourth year of the Hijra. Umm Salamah observed the waiting period (iddah) and became pregnant on the twentieth of Shawwal in the fourth year of the Hijra. She was among the first to embrace Islam and migrated with her husband, Abu Salamah (may God be pleased with them both), to Abyssinia. It is said that she was the first woman to migrate. To the city.
The events surrounding her migration to Medina with her husband, Abu Salama (may God be pleased with them both)
The men of Banu al-Mughira had separated her from her husband, Abu Salama, and her son. Banu Abd al-Asad had taken the boy and imprisoned her until, after about a year, one of her cousins took pity on her and said to Banu al-Mughira, "Won't you release this poor woman? (Meaning, leave her alone.) You have separated her from her husband and her son." They replied, "Go back to your husband if you wish." Banu Abd al-Asad then returned her son to her, and she traveled with him on a camel until she reached al-Tan'im. There, Uthman ibn Talha met her and, knowing she was alone, escorted her to where her husband was staying. She used to say, "I don't know of any family in Islam that suffered as much as the family of Abu Salama, and I have never seen a companion more generous than Uthman ibn Talha.
The Premonitions Before the Blessed Prophetic Marriage
Abu Salamah (may God be pleased with him) asked her to remarry after his death.
Ibn Sa'd narrated on her authority (may God be pleased with her) that she said: I said to Abu Salamah: "If a woman's husband dies, and she is among the people of Paradise, and she does not remarry after him, God will reunite them in Paradise. Similarly, if a woman dies and her husband remains, then come, let me promise you that you will not remarry after me, nor will I remarry after you." He said: "Will you obey me?" I said: "I only asked your permission because I intend to obey you." He said: "Then, when I die, you may remarry." Then he said: "O God, grant Umm Salamah a husband after me who is better than me, so that he will not grieve her or harm her." She said: "When he died, I thought: 'Who is this who is better for me than Abu Salamah?' I waited a while, then the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) came and stood at the door and said something similar to what was mentioned previously."
She recounts her own experiences, may God be pleased with her, and her feelings before and after her marriage to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him
Umm Salamah said: I heard the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “There is no Muslim who suffers a calamity and says what God has commanded: ‘Indeed, we belong to God, and indeed, to Him we will return. O God, reward me for my affliction and replace it with something better,’ except that God will replace it with something better.” She said: When Abu Salamah died, I said: Which Muslim is better than Abu Salamah? He was the first to emigrate to the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him. Then I said it, and God replaced him with the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him. She said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, sent Hatib ibn Abi Balta’ah to propose marriage to me on his behalf. I said: I have a daughter, and I am jealous. He said: “As for her daughter, we will pray to God to make her independent of him, and I will pray to God to remove your jealousy.
What were the characteristics of Umm Salamah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) feared for me?
1- I am a very jealous woman.
2- I have young children. In another narration: I have dependents.
3- I have no male guardian present to witness my marriage.
Umar said: She was among the women as if she were not one of them, showing no jealousy whatsoever.
The Blessed Marriage - The Second Marriage - to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
Umm Salamah observed her waiting period until the 20th of Shawwal in the fourth year of the Hijra. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married her during the 20th of Shawwal. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married her after the Battle of Badr in Shawwal of the second year of the Hijra. This is incorrect, because Abu Umar said regarding the death of Abu Salamah that it was in Jumada al-Akhirah of the third year, and he did not marry her until after the completion of her waiting period following Abu Salamah's death.
And in the hadith of Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman
She said, “Someone like me is not to be married. As for me, I have no children, I am jealous, and I have children.” Umar heard what she said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and became even more angry on behalf of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) than he had been for himself when she rejected him. He met her and said, “Are you the one who rejected the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?” She said, “O son of al-Khattab, I have such and such a problem.” So, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to her and said, “As for what you said about your jealousy, I will pray to Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, to remove your jealousy. As for what you said about your misfortune, Allah will provide for your children.” In another narration: “As for the children, they are in the hands of Allah and His Messenger. As for the fact that there is no one among your guardians here to give you in marriage, there is no one among your guardians, present or absent, who dislikes me.” In the hadith of Abu Bakr, in a different wording: “There is no one among them, present or absent, who can appease me, and I am older than him.” So, she said to her son Umar, “Give me in marriage to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” He said, “So he gave her in marriage to him.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “As for…” I did not reduce what I gave to your sister so-and-so. Thabit said to Ibn Umm Salamah: What did he give to so-and-so? He said: He gave her two dirhams to make her companion, two saddles, and a pillow stuffed with palm fiber. Then he left her. Then he came to her a second time while she was breastfeeding Zainab. When she saw him coming, she put the child in her lap. He greeted her, then returned and came to her a third time. When she saw him, she put the child in her lap. She said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, was modest and generous. He returned. Umar said: Then Ammar bin Yasir came and took her from her lap. In another version: “Ammar bin Yasir, who was her maternal half-brother, noticed this and snatched Zainab from her lap. He said: Give her here. In another version: Leave this stubborn woman who prevented the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, from coming to her. Then the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, came to her and looked around the house, but he did not see the child in her lap. Her name was Zainab. He said: Where is Zainab? She said: Ammar came and took her. In the hadith of Abu Bakr, the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “You will find me coming to you tonight.” She said: So, I put down my burdens and took out some grains of barley that were in a threshing floor, and I took some fat and used it to support myself. He spent the night, then in the morning he said when morning came: “You have a right to be honored by your family. If you wish, I will give you seven [days] for the women.
Some Incidents from her life with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) glad tidings to her
"You are in your place, and you are in a good place."
And on the authority of Umar ibn Abi Salamah, the stepson of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: When this verse was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): {Indeed, Allah intends only to remove from you all impurity, O People of the Household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification} [Al-Ahzab: 33], in the house of Umm Salamah, he called Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn and covered them with a cloak, and Ali was behind him, so he covered him with a cloak. Then he said: "O Allah, these are my family, so remove from them all impurity and purify them." “Purification,” said Umm Salamah. “And am I with them, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “You are in your place, and you are well.” (Narrated by At-Tirmidhi)
Her advice to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Hudaybiyyah
Ibn Hajar said, “Umm Salamah was known for her exceptional beauty, profound intellect, and sound judgment. Her advice to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Hudaybiyyah demonstrates her abundant wisdom and the soundness of her opinion.” This is because after the peace treaty was signed between the Messenger and the polytheists, and the Companions had some reservations about it because they returned from Mecca without a victory, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family and grant them peace, stood up and said: “O people, slaughter and shave your heads.” But no one stood up. Then he repeated it, but no one stood up. He repeated it again, but no one stood up. So, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family and grant them peace, went back and entered upon Umm Salamah and said: “O Umm Salamah, what is the matter with the people?” She said, “O Messenger of God, they have been afflicted by what you have seen. Do not speak to any of them. Go to your sacrificial animal wherever it is and slaughter it and then shave your head. If you do this, the people will do the same.” So, the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, went out without speaking to anyone until he reached his sacrificial animal and slaughtered it. Then he sat down and shaved his head. The people then stood up to slaughter their animals and shave their heads, until they were halfway between Mecca and Medina, when Surah Al-Fath was revealed. (Narrated by Ahmad)
She said to the Prophet of God, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, “Why are we not mentioned in the Quran?”
And indeed, Umm Salamah, may God be pleased with her, was the reason for the revelation of a great verse in the Holy Quran. On the authority of Abdur-Rahman ibn Shaybah, he said: I heard Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, say: I said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, “O Messenger of God, why are we not mentioned in the Quran as men are?” She said: One day at noon, I was startled to hear his call from the pulpit while I was combing my hair. I quickly tied my hair up and went out to one of their rooms. I listened intently near the palm fronds, and he was saying from the pulpit: “O people, God says in His Book: ‘Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, and the guardians of the night…’” “And those who guard their private parts, and those who remember Allah often, both men and women - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.” [Al-Ahzab: 35]
The narrations of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) - Regarding the sayings of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)
The Supplication in Times of Calamity
First Narration
It was narrated on the authority of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, “There is no Muslim who is afflicted with a calamity and does not say what Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, has commanded: ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we will return.’” O Allah, reward me for my affliction and replace it with something better. Indeed, Allah will replace it with something better for him.
The second narration
Abu Salamah came to Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: “I heard something from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that is more pleasing to me than such and such. I do not know what I could compare it to. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘No one is afflicted with a calamity and then says, “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” (To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return), and then says: “O Allah, I seek Your reward for my affliction, so reward me for it and replace it with something better.”’”
She even spoke about the calamity of her husband Abu Salamah’s death (may Allah be pleased with him), saying
“…When Abu Salamah died, I said it,” meaning she said: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. O Allah, replace my affliction with something better for me.” I say: Who is better than Abu Salamah? I kept saying it until I said it. When her waiting period was over, Abu Bakr sent a proposal of marriage to her, but she refused. Then Umar sent a proposal of marriage to her, but she refused. She said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a proposal of marriage to her: He proposed to her, and she said: "Welcome to the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace."
