The Conquests of Iraq and Syria

"Expanding and Securing the Scope of Islamic Influence"

Al-Muthanna ibn Haritha had begun the jihad in Iraq, and then Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him) sent two armies to him: the army of Khalid ibn al-Walid, which set out for Iraq in Muharram, or some say Rajab, in the year 12 AH. Abu Bakr then sent detachments and reinforcements to assist him. The second army was that of Iyad ibn Ghanm, whom Abu Bakr ordered to enter Iraq from its northeast, starting with al-Musaykh on the borders of Syria, and proceeding until he reached Khalid ibn al-Walid's army. The Muslim army numbered 12,000 men, who assembled at al-Ubulla. The army of the Islamic state, under the leadership of Khalid ibn al-Walid, engaged in several battles with the Persians, as follows:

The Battle of Chains

The Persians were defeated in this battle, even though they chained themselves together to prevent fleeing. This is why it became known as the Battle of Chains. The Muslims captured 1,000 camels. Khalid then sent detachments to the lands surrounding Hira, where they seized much wealth. Khalid did not harm the farmers who did not fight him and treated them well, as Abu Bakr al-Siddiq had instructed him.

The Battle of Walaja

In this battle, the Muslims killed the Persian commanders and 30,000 other soldiers. The remaining Persians fled to their ships, while Khalid remained at al-Madhar. When Khosrow learned of his army's defeat, he sent two more armies to Walaja to trap the Muslims between them. However, the Sword of God divided his army, leading the charge, then deploying a force to attack from the rear and another from the flanks, thus trapping the Persians. The Persians suffered a crushing defeat, and the survivors fled, but they died of thirst in the desert.

The Conquest of Hira

After the Persians suffered successive defeats, some Arab Christians joined them, but God supported the Muslims with His soldiers, and the Sword of God (Muhammad) achieved victory at Alis. He then marched until he reached Amghishiya, where its inhabitants scattered, and he seized much booty. He then proceeded to Hira and successfully crossed the Euphrates River, besieging it until its inhabitants surrendered and sought peace.

The Conquest of Anbar (or the Battle of the Eyes)

Khalid ibn al-Walid left al-Qa'qa' ibn 'Amr al-Tamimi in charge of al-Hirah and went to Anbar to assist the commander 'Iyad ibn Ghanm. He found that the people of Anbar had dug trenches and fortified themselves, so the Muslims besieged them. Khalid ordered his men to aim arrows at their eyes, and in the first shot, they hit 1,000 eyes. Therefore, this battle was called the Battle of the Eyes. Khalid resorted to a clever ruse: he slaughtered weak camels and threw them into the trench, allowing the Muslims to cross it. At this point, Shiraz, the Persian commander, was forced to request peace, on the condition that he and some of his soldiers could leave safely. Khalid agreed. After successfully conquering Anbar, he marched to Ayn al-Tamr and found that the Arabs had gathered behind Aqqa ibn Abi Aqqa and allied themselves with the Persians under the leadership of Mihran. However, he also succeeded in defeating them, and the inhabitants of the fortress surrendered to Khalid's rule. He beheaded Aqqa, and Mihran fled.

The Conquest of Dumat al-Jandal

After Ayn al-Tamr, Khalid proceeded to Dumat al-Jandal, which was under the control of two leaders: al-Judi ibn Rabi'a and Ukaydir ibn Abd al-Malik. However, they had a falling out. Ukaydir left his people, and Asim ibn Amr pursued and captured him. Khalid then ordered his execution. He then placed Dumat al-Jandal in a pincer movement, leading one side himself and the other under the command of Iyad ibn Ghanm. When the Muslims succeeded in defeating the army of Dumat al-Jandal, the people fortified themselves inside the fortress and closed its gates. But Khalid managed to breach the fortress and cross it, killing a large number of them.

The Battle of Firaz

After the Sword of God (Imam Ali) had conquered Iraq, he marched to the Firaz region, located on the border between Syria, Iraq, and the Arabian Peninsula, to secure his rear. The Romans were angered and allied themselves with the Persians and some Arab tribes, gathering against the Muslims. The two sides fought fiercely until the Muslims emerged victorious, killing tens of thousands of Persians.

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq's Conquests in the Levant

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq had dispatched Khalid ibn Sa'id ibn al-'As with an army to Tayma, a town located between the borders of the Levant and Wadi al-Qura. However, Khalid moved without waiting for reinforcements, and the Romans attacked him in large numbers, resulting in his defeat. Abu Bakr then declared a general mobilization for jihad and formed four brigades, each with its own commander. He ordered them to proceed along separate routes, as follows:

The army of Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan: numbering 7,000 fighters, tasked with conquering Damascus.

The army of Shurahbil ibn Hasana: numbering 3,000 or 4,000 fighters, heading towards Tabuk, al-Balqa', and then Busra.

The army of Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah: numbering approximately 4,000 men, heading towards Homs.

The army of Amr ibn al-'As: heading towards Palestine, consisting of approximately 7,000 fighters

The Roman military forces were strong and numerous, divided into two large sections, one in Palestine and the other in Antioch. When the emperor ordered his armies to march out and attack the Muslims and destroy them, the Muslim army commanders sent word to Abu Bakr, who provided them with additional men, horses, and weapons. The Muslim commanders in Syria also decided to gather their forces and meet at Yarmouk to fight the Romans. Abu Bakr then dispatched Khalid ibn al-Walid from Iraq to Syria to assume command of the armies, given his exceptional military capabilities. Several major battles ensued between the Muslims and the Romans, including:

The Battle of Ajnadayn

Amr ibn al-As withdrew from his position and headed towards Ajnadayn. Khalid arrived with his army in time, bringing the Muslim force to 30,000. Amr clashed with the Roman forces, but Khalid then charged them with his large army, and a fierce battle took place. Khalid ibn al-Walid and Amr ibn al-As played crucial roles, demonstrating their skill as military commanders. They stormed the Roman lines, reached their commander, and killed him. The Roman forces then scattered in different directions, and the Muslims emerged victorious at Ajnadayn.

The Battle of Yarmouk

After the great victory at Ajnadayn, the Muslim forces, numbering approximately 45,000, gathered at Yarmouk under the command of Khalid ibn al-Walid, the Sword of God. Then the Roman forces, led by Theodore, arrived, numbering 240,000 soldiers. They encamped in a wide area, but the escape route was narrow, effectively creating a trench around them. Khalid divided his army into several sections. He placed Amr ibn al-As, along with Shurahbil ibn Hasana, on the right flank; Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan on the left; and Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah, along with al-Qa'qa' ibn Amr and Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl, in the center.

At the Beginning of the Battle

The Romans initially gained the upper hand, and the Muslims fled the battle. However, women pelted them with stones, forcing them back into action and charging the enemy. The Romans, however, did not relent and continued their fierce attack. Their right flank charged the Muslim left, attacking Amr ibn al-As and his men, and reaching the heart of the camp. But the Muslim army returned to the battlefield and succeeded in recapturing the areas seized by the Romans. Khalid ibn al-Walid then attacked the Roman left flank, killing 6,000 of them, and besieged them between the Zarqa River and the Yarmouk Valley. The Muslims also managed to separate the Roman infantry from their cavalry and attacked them until they were exhausted. The Roman forces tried to find a breach to escape. Khalid ordered that the cavalry be allowed to flee, then the infantry gathered in the trenches, chained together. When one of them was killed, seven others were dragged along with him, chained to the same post. A large number of Roman soldiers were killed, reaching 120,000, of whom 80,000 were killed in chains, and 40,000 fell into the valley. The survivors withdrew to Fahl and Damascus. Three thousand Muslims were martyred in the Battle of Yarmouk, including: Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl and his son, Aban ibn Sa'id, Amr ibn Sa'id, and Salamah ibn Hisham.

The most famous Muslim heroes in the conquests of Iraq and Syria were

1- Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him), whom he sent to Iraq.

2- Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (may God be pleased with him), whom he sent to Syria.

3- Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him), whom he sent with reinforcements to Abu Ubaidah (may God be pleased with him).

4- Al-Muthanna ibn Haritha al-Shaybani (may God be pleased with him), who was with Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him).

5- Adi ibn Hatim al-Ta'i (may God be pleased with him), who was with Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him).

6- Dirar ibn al-Azwar (may God be pleased with him), who was with Khalid (may God be pleased with him).

7- Dirar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him), who was with Khalid (may God be pleased with him).

These heroic leaders were able to achieve a series of brilliant victories in Iraq and Syria against the Persian and Roman empires simultaneously. Among the most important strategic directives for leadership was the advice given by Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him) to Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him). On the authority of Abdullah bin Amr, may God be pleased with him, he said: Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, wrote to Amr bin Al-Aas: “The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, consulted on the matter of war, so you should follow him.” And the armies of the Islamic state during the time of Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, fought fierce and intense battles against the Roman state on the land of the Levant, and perhaps the most important and famous of them were: Ajnadayn, Marj Al-Saffar and Yarmouk, in which the Muslims achieved a great and resounding victory, and they gained much booty, and they killed countless Romans, including their leaders and chiefs.

The Psychology: Determinants, Category, Examples, Estimated Relative Influence, Most Important Age Group

Genetic Heritability

The heritability of the Big Five personality traits and temperament accounts for 40-60% of the trait variance from prenatal to infancy.

Shared Environment

Parenting style, family socioeconomic status, and home culture account for 0-10% (less than expected) from early to mid-infancy.

Non-Shared Environment

Peer relationships, individual school experiences, trauma, and birth order account for 30-45% from childhood to adulthood.

Biological Factors

Brain structure, hormones, and neurotransmitter systems overlap with genetic factors; significant throughout life.

Social and Cultural Context

Collective versus individualistic values, gender norms, and socioeconomic opportunities account for moderately; varies with trait from childhood to adolescence.

Life Experience and Perception: Occupation, relationships, major life events, and self-concept account for moderately to highly. From Adolescence to Old Age

The Study's Conclusion

As I read above, there are many factors that can drastically change a person's character, perhaps even drastically. Among the most influential are the following three:

1- Self-Concept

Who am I? Why am I here? What is required of me here? And where am I going in the future?

2- Trauma and Harsh Life Experiences

These are among the most powerful factors that can drastically change a person's character, turning them into something completely different. A person may feel like they no longer recognize themselves. Even children are affected by trauma in ways that can never be reversed, leaving them with the same innocence they once possessed.

3- Current Job – Especially if it Improves

You may have heard of marital infidelity, or a husband marrying another woman, or, God forbid, a wife cheating after receiving a prestigious new job. Other factors, such as age, clothing, environment, and peers, also play a role.

From this we conclude:

We all agree that the character of our master Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him) underwent a complete transformation. We know the extent of his mercy towards the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), comforting him with all his wealth and even sacrificing himself in the cave, shielding him by looking inside before the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) entered. He was the one who waged war after war, leading 11 brigades and thousands of Muslims—great and noble heroes from among the Muhajireen and Ansar—against the apostates, the false prophets, and those who refused to pay Zakat. He set a living example of a character transformation, complete with its intensity, as well as a change in self-perception when assuming great responsibility and a higher position. He provided the most magnificent example of this.

Among the lessons we learn from the life of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq are the following:

The Lessons we learn from his life before Islam

1- The trade is shrewdness

It is said that trade accounts for nine-tenths of profit. Therefore, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq was one of the wealthiest companions. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "How excellent is righteous wealth for a righteous man." We know this was before he embraced Islam, but his character was exemplary, as attested to by those who lived during his time, particularly his honesty and integrity in trade. When trade is combined with honesty and integrity, the demand for such a trade increases. The West says, "If people hear about your good qualities, they will test you. If you pass the test, the likelihood of establishing a business with you is high." This is what happened. As they say, people love those who treat them well. A person with wealth and good character benefits those around him with what God has bestowed upon him, and his word will be heeded in time.

2- He possessed knowledge of genealogy

Genealogy means knowing who a person is, their lineage, and the rest of their family, tracing it back to the earliest and youngest member. It also means knowing the family's distinguishing characteristics, whether commendable or not, their beliefs, their professions, their wealth, and so on. This is a field of knowledge not widely known among the Arabs. What does this mean? It is said that experience equals minimal effort. Someone who understands currency today can distinguish counterfeit from genuine coins at a glance. Similarly, observing people's faces and knowing someone who might be about their new faith—which they will soon embrace—is experience, insight, and knowledge of genealogy.

3- Being fair to oneself is the highest form of devotion to God Almighty.

When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) disagreed with his beloved wife Aisha (may God be pleased with her), Abu Bakr intervened on two occasions, siding with her rather than siding with her. It is rare in life for fathers to act against the best interests of their children, especially daughters, for the greater good of the marriage.

4- His Unique Stance and the Beginning of Strength and Resolve – “Take what We have given you with strength” – from the very first death of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him.

His unique stance, may God be pleased with him, and his firm stance, reminding the believers of the noble verse (…Muhammad is but a messenger; other messengers have passed on before him…) and other similar verses, demonstrates considerable strength, despite his intense love and attachment to our master, the Messenger of God. But the truth is more deserving of being followed, for God is the Creator and the only God worthy of worship in this religion.

The lessons we learn from his life after embracing Islam

1- His Individual Call: He believed wholeheartedly, even volunteering to spread the hadith of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, sacrificing his security, his business, and his position among a disbelieving people. He was the first to convey the Prophet's hadith (convey from me, even if it is a single verse), and he was the first to do so – may God be pleased with him – to the point that six of the ten who were given glad tidings of Paradise during their lifetimes – may God be pleased with them – were among those who embraced Islam at his hands.

2- He Sacrifices Himself and His Family with His Wealth: He spent his wealth in the cause of God during the migration to Medina, and again when he had amassed his fortune. Others in the city, in the army of hardship, and others.

3- His unwavering belief and unparalleled sincerity of friendship. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, almost called him his close friend, but true friendship is the close relationship with God Almighty. So, God Almighty called him the Truthful One in a Quran that will be recited until the Day of Resurrection, where He, the Exalted, said about him, may God be pleased with him - (...when he said to his companion...) and the companion in this verse was our master Abu Bakr al-Siddiq. This explains to us the meaning of the truthful one from the perspective of God Almighty and His Messenger. The word "friend" comes from sincerity in companionship, dealings, advice, and everything else. With the changing events in a friend's life, it is said in psychology that people are friends until circumstances change in one of their lives, especially if they change for the worse and the other's life changes for the better. Often, the camaraderie ends, but not the friendship. There is a work camaraderie, a study camaraderie, and another camaraderie of similar circumstances such as grief, economic hardship, or other things. But the word "friend" comes from sincerity in all your dealings with this friend. Please do not call yourself a friend of someone if you intend to betray them for any reason. The world is full of thorns.

‎What we benefit from his life after the caliphate ‎

‎1- His opinion on the caliphs and kings - may Allah be pleased with him‎
‎He once gave a sermon and after praising Allah and praising Him, he said: "The most miserable people in this world and in the Hereafter are the kings", and the people raised their heads in astonishment and said: "What is wrong with you, O people! You are a hasty challenger, for one of the kings is the one who has asceticism in what is in his hand and desires what is in the hands of others... It is said that whoever asks for the emirate, do not order him, and this is our master Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and his opinion about kings: tyrants, and tyrants: they are those who exceed the reasonable right to ask for things or take them unjustly, do you not see this in the course of human history, for kings are not convinced of a limited king, but they always seek what is in the hands of others and seek to own and increase the area of their king, such as the previous empires such as the Ottoman Empire, the Greek Empire, the Soviet Union, or others, today. It came back but under other names under its umbrella wars that reverted some countries to the Middle Ages just in order to increase the area and let the governed go to hell, this is what we have read with our eyes in human history, and this is what our master Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq explained, it is no wonder that with this mentality he will indeed be the best of the Muhammadan Ummah and our master Umar, Uthman, Talha or other great and great Companions - may God be pleased with them all - has not preceded us except with a gentle and hard heart on everything that does not serve Islam in At the same time, no wonder, no wonder. ‎

‎2- His modest home before and after the caliphate ‎

‎The longer we live, the harder our hearts are, the more we stand in contemplation before the Almighty's saying: "... So, they were long gone, and their hearts were broken. Surah Al-Hadid) i.e., the longer we live and the longer we live, the harder our hearts become, so be me. Be harsh on the Hereafter and acknowledge it, so we cling more and more to the spacious house, the pleasant compound, and the sweet and beautiful view in our homes, this is hardness of heart, do you not remember also what the Almighty said in Surah Al-Tawbah (... And dwellings that you are pleased with are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and strive for His cause, so wait until Allah brings His command, and Allah does not guide the people who are disobedient. What time? Or is it a time of wars and departure from one's own soul because of the love of jihad against this religion? Not when jihad is waged for this religion, because of the evidence: I love you!! There is love for one thing and there is love for something bigger, so what is the greatest love? Love of Allah Almighty, read what He said in Surah Al-Baqarah ﴿ And of mankind there are those who take equals besides Allah who love them as they love Allah ۖ and those who believe are more loving to Allah ۗ So what are the equals that Allah means blessed and exalted, we Muslims do not worship trees or stones? What are the idols of Muslims – if you will? Idols or idols of Muslims, as one of the esteemed scholars says, the 8 things that came in Surah Al-Tawbah (... Say, "If your fathers and brothers ... The verse) so Allah Almighty counted when there is a conflict of interests... My interest and the interest of religion ... It is a peer and then a feast for those who have chosen this love, the love of children, fathers, husbands, or the dwellings that we accept, or the trade that we fear will be slackened... etc. are a kind of equals, i.e. we have made them equal to God Almighty, so imagine that your house, no matter how short it is!! That you are at a pivotal moment in your life that you have made him equal to God Almighty with His power, power, power, and sovereignty over the heavens and the earth and everything in between? Does this make sense? Yes, it makes sense when we have a long life, our hearts harden, our master Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq lived a long time until the sixties and his heart was hardened, he reached the power of government and people did not dispute about the curse of the world, but he was content with a simple decision and gold that reconciles the affairs of Muslims here and there, and he supports this state and leaves it to those who are behind him from the great Companions who are strong and impregnable and feared by everyone who hears of it, and these are the countries that are not to be underestimated. ‎

‎3- The jurisprudence of the Companions of the Companions who fought in wars ‎

‎They did not blame him for not participating in wars with them, even though he was doing so during the life of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), a sign of the soundness of the Companions' chests and that the brothers of faith are above every voice, even the voice inside the chests, which is sometimes called the hadith of the soul, no one is inseparable from it, but religion, belief, and the elevation of the word of Allah Almighty and the preservation of wise management are above all considerations, so if the leadership is wise to stand by it and protect it, it is also a sign of The jurisprudence of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) is of the importance of having a prince, a king or a president who rules the country, and that his absence for some reason brings chaos

and that the strong control the weak and eat his right if he can find a way to do so. ‎

Let us turn a page from the pages of immortal history

Why has this history of humanity been immortalized by time? Because it is glorious, and you, we, and they are also making history. Don't laugh. You, you, no matter your position in this life, no matter how marginalized, enslaved, or caught in armed conflicts or even proxy wars you are, you are making history. If you live long enough and remain steadfast in the face of life's hardships, you will one day have something to tell your grandchildren—believe me. But those who oppress and transgress, forgetting the beginning and the end, who build magnificent houses, fleets of cars, and countless sums of money in banks, then leave all this to their children, will spend it and perhaps not remember them with this wealth except by giving a water tap here or there as charity in their name. Perhaps they won't even remember them with a prayer in the midst of life, and perhaps they won't even begrudge them that water tap. So they return to God Almighty penniless, with nothing. But you, steadfast in the midst of trials, have understood that life only breaks the weak. The believer is like a palm tree; the winds may buffet it this way and that, but they can never uproot it. And if you live long enough, you will be proud that you were strong—steadfast. The wind did not shake you, nor did it uproot you. You are perhaps aware that some forms of victory are: to die upholding your principles—to die in obedience to God Almighty—to gain the Hereafter, even if your share in this world is meager. For God Almighty protects His believing servant from the world as you protect your children from all evil…

Dear reader, may you remain well. All goodness lies within the lives of the first three centuries. May God Almighty be pleased with those who passed through human or Islamic history and left us a white page by whose light we are always guided.
