The Messenger of God's letter to the two princes of Yamamah
About the Messenger of God to the Prince of Yamamah
Sulait ibn Amr al-Amri - may God be pleased with him
Sulait was one of the first emigrants who embraced Islam early in Mecca and migrated to Abyssinia during the second migration, accompanied by his wife Fatimah bint Alqamah.
((He was one of the first emigrants to migrate twice.))
((Sulait witnessed Uhud and all the battles with the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace.))
The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, sent a letter to Hudha ibn Ali al-Hanafi, the ruler of Yamamah, along with Sulait ibn Amr al-Amri, may God be pleased with him.
The Text of the Book
(In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad, the Messenger of God, to Hudhah ibn Ali. Peace be upon those who follow guidance. Know that my religion will prevail to the ends of the hoof and the sandal. So submit and you will be safe. And I will make for you what is under your hands.)
When this letter was read to Hudha, he responded politely to Sulayt, saying:
When Sulayt presented him with the sealed letter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he accepted it and honored him. He read the letter to him, but he returned it without a reply. He then wrote to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “How beautiful and wonderful is what you call for! I am the poet and orator of my people, and the Arabs are in awe of my position. So delegate some of the matter to me, and I will follow you.” He rewarded Sulayt with a prize and clothed him in garments woven from Hejr. He presented this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) read his letter and said: “If he asked me for a piece of land, I would not do it. He would perish and what he had in his hands would perish.” When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the conquest, Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to him with the news that Hudhah had died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, a liar will emerge from Yamamah, a prophesyer, and he will be killed after me.” Someone said: “O Messenger of God, who will kill him?” The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said to him: “You and your companions,” and so it was.
We can learn from this story as follows:
1. It is said that whoever has a burning beginning will have a bright end. Conversely, if you encounter something displeasing in your later days, remember what you did in your youth. You are the product of your deeds. Consider the companion of the Messenger of God (Sulait ibn Amr al-Amri). He did not go to a king except after tests of faith, not from the Messenger of God, but from the Lord of the Messenger of God. He witnessed the Battle of Uhud and performed two migrations. At the end of his life, he faced two great challenges: (Going to a king, not knowing whether he would return safely or not, and killing a liar who claimed prophethood, which is a great matter.)
2. Some kings, or most of them, held on to their kingdoms and desired nothing more than what lay beneath their feet, even though it is possible to connect the earth to the heavens through obedience to God and submission to His command. Imagine that a king today, with servants, attendants, and lofty palaces, will tomorrow be among the poor of the Hereafter. Unbelievable, is it? Even worse, it is possible that he had a servant who possessed nothing of the worldly possessions, who would outshine him on the Day of Resurrection in palaces, rivers, and beautiful maidens. ..etc. They only look at what is under their feet. We have not tried it, and we ask God for wellness. It seems that the kingdom has power over the soul and spirit, and it takes everything from you. The prince of Yamamah asked for something (the world) that he would inherit from the Messenger of God or a task that he would carry out. He even tempted the Messenger of God with his talents in poetry and that he was well-known among his people to the point that everyone would follow him. So he lost this world and the hereafter.
3 - The owner of Yamamah died and his idea died, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, died and his idea remained. Just remember: you are the product of your thoughts, and if your thoughts are good, they will remain and you will perish. The lifespan of thoughts is longer than lifespans. Remember the Almighty's saying: "As for the foam, it vanishes, being cast aside, but that which benefits people remains on the earth." [Surat Ar-Ra'd]
4 - What is this determination and forward movement that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had? (And know that my religion will prevail to the end of the hoof and the sandal. So submit and you will be safe, and make for yourself what is under your hands.) We Muslims, if we pass by If we are stressed or our car breaks down, we become pessimistic about this day. If two consecutive days pass, we say there is no peace in the world, until we wake up to a war that leaves nothing behind. We ask for safety for everyone. Thus, depression overwhelms us from every side. Return to the Sunnah of your beloved, for this is his Sunnah (trust in his Lord even if he refused time and time again). God fulfilled his task and he died, but his idea remained. Where is your determination?
